The last episode was supposed to come out in February but didn’t come out until March, so in order to make up for lost time we are double-dipping and continuing on with THE DECADE IN REVIEW~!, as we look back on the year 2015. This is quite a task, considering that a year’s worth of world events seem to have already happened between January 2020 and March 2020 alone.
Introduction (0:00 – 21:26)
Following up on where we ended last episode, we talk about some of the anime-related things that have been canceled or postponed since the last time we released an episode. It’s because of the COVID-19 virus pandemic. As a disclaimer: this was recorded weeks ago, and the situation has dramatically changed since we talked about this (and will continue to change).
Promo: Right Stuf Anime (21:26 – 23:32)
We understand that several million people are now unemployed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic (including some of us), so if you need to delete your Patreon pledges or minimize non-essential purchases then absolutely do so. But if you have the financial means and you are realizing that the Crunchyroll and Netflix (and Youtube, and Twitch, and…) servers can’t reliably deliver 1080p streams on account of all the simultaneous users, consider some physical media purchases to get you through this time. Right Stuf is–for now, anyway–still open, and still shipping media orders in a timely fashion. If you order through Amazon, they may take a month to get to filling that order.
The DECADE IN REVIEW~!: 2015 (23:32 – 2:39:59)
Oh I’m sorry, do you have something BETTER to do with your free time other than listen to us reminisce about titles of note from 2015? Bearing in mind that these titles are listed IN NO ORDER OF IMPORTANCE, such that the biggest, most memorable, most notable thing may not be mentioned first or last? Or at all? No. No, we didn’t think so. Anyway, there are so many freaking shows now so if we either missed something or grossly mis-characterized the truth about a title that was mentioned, let’s hear it in the comments.
Go! Samurai is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNCP9167n88
Also, Kimura-sensei sadly passed away a couple years ago, unfortunately.
Here are a few shows from 2015 that I found noteworthy, that you guys didn’t mention:
Maria the Virgin Witch
Rolling?Girls
Rokka no Yuusha (aka Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
Owari no Seraph (a guilty pleasure, to be sure)
Apparently this year’s WorldCon, which was scheduled to be in New Zealand, is going to be a remote con this year as well. There’s been some wailing and gnashing of teeth on the con-running side of things to figure out if it’s possible to have a Business Meeting remotely.
Also, Season 2 of Umaru-Chan was licensed, but only for streaming as Umaru-Chan R. Not sure if it got a dub as season 1 did (I only care because this is one of the anime I’m thinking for my anime viewing nights with my parents – that’s right, I got my parents into anime).
Man, hearing Monster Musume came out in 2015 reminded me how long the monster girl genre took to get mainstream. I first encountered that stuff back in 2008-9 on /tg/, and the MonMusu manga came out a few years later. That said, despite being ecchi harem non-sense, the premise at least allowed for lots of comedy based on the goofy premise, and the anime added a lot of really good visual gags of its own.
What I don’t get is why no one on that production committee had the bright idea of setting up an Amazon Worlds style approved fanfic thing and just letting people do their own MonMusu stories in other countries. They could’ve raked in a lot of money that way.
I forgot Gundam Thunderbolt and Iron-Blooded Orphans came out in the same year, because I only watched like 1 or 2 episodes of Thunderbolt and peaced out after seeing the Federation spacenoid MS team just die instantly, Io being an asshole, and more of that tiresome “noble Zeon soldier fighting for the cause” garbage that UC keeps trotting out. IBO, for all its flaws, at least created a sandbox setting that you can do a lot with, and it disappoints me that the best Sunrise can do with it is a mobile game. I’d rather have a live action Calamity War movie.
Umaru is an insufferable brat and I wish her brother had the balls to kick her to the curb.
While MonMusu kicked off the monster girl genre to the “mainstream” of anime, I feel like a lot of other things have appeared in its wake that have done monster girls better. Especially this years’ Interspecies Reviewers.
