Anime World Order Show # 234 – We Dodged COVID at Otakon 2024, But Maybe Not Heat Stroke

No review this time around, but Gerald and Clarissa went to Otakon 2024 so here’s their convention report. Despite another record breaking attendance figure, they did NOT catch COVID! They did however, barely manage to avoid getting heat stroke/exhaustion. Curse you, climate change!

A chalk art tribute to the recently-deceased Akira Toriyama.
Take note, Anime Expo: THIS is what a top-tier anime con game room looks like (not pictured here: all the Initial D/Gundam sit-downs)!
Carl Horn at the Dark Horse Comics panel springs a free plug of Gerald’s midnight panel.
The MangaGamer dealer’s table truly speaking to the average visual/light novel enjoyer spirit, which since they spend money on this stuff skews Aylo’s algorithm metrics and now all the mainstream real-life US-produced pornography follows these tropes as well (within approval parameters of credit card payment processors).
GamerSupps was also courting that demographic. Someone should probably tell them that even though he’s dead, they aren’t legally clear to use George Carlin’s photo on their “Grandpa’s Ashes” flavor.
This is probably the closest to SFW picture of Gerald’s present: a 2 foot, 3D printed Rangiku. Perhaps someday we will actually watch/read Bleach rather than just leer at Rangiku and Yoruichi…
We never actually did say what Clarissa’s gift WAS, but it was this.

  1. I haven’t been to Otakon in years, but always enjoyed going, so glad to hear it is still a good time. It is truly amazing that so much tokusatsu is finally getting released on Blu-Ray in the US and it would be incredible if Dennou Keisatsu Cybercop got released. That show is insane. Another great AWO episode, thanks!

  2. I tried not commenting, but… you… keep… bringing up things…..

You said the OTAku CONvention was held in DC. I never been there, but my mother was. She was there for 4th of July about 20 years ago. And it was just as hot. She described it as being in an oven and slowly dying. Maybe that place is just cursed? I never experienced heat like that anywhere I been to.

You brought up a lack of optical drives, and I think the move is overall smart, for laptops. Their design is generally terrible, with companies trying to make the form as thin as possible, meaning cramming ALL THOSE PARTS right next to each other, and hoping they won’t melt when the fans predictably fail to do their job. Air flow requires empty space, but laptop designers seem to have a phobia of empty spaces. SO, getting rid of disk drives in laptops makes all the sense. Then, the 2nd correct solution is to have USB3 detachable drives. I own a Pioneer Bluray USB3 drive, and it is very quality. It is also a plus that I get to pick my drive, and buy the best one. For DESKtops removing drives seems more like a cost cutting measure. And that is not something you should cut. I don’t want to be pessimistic, but it seems, outside of laptops, the move away from disk drives is also a move towards the bright future where you own nothing and are happy. I am not happy at the thought that I will need to be online 24/7, and have corporations censor or ban certain works that are not kosher enough for me to watch. But that’s my free will talking, guess I’m just not lobotomized yet. When I will be, I won’t complain anymore.

You also mentioned the Riding Bean Bluray reissue missing the original commentary tracks. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! When choosing between Gunsmith Cats and Riding Bean, I picked Gunsmith, since I already seen that one and knew it’s 10/10, and there were only a few copies left in the store. But that also means Riding Bean quickly sold out too. And now I will never have those commentaries……. if I don’t become thief. It’s tragic. I hope this was a space limitation issue.

Regarding Digimon, I will definitely pay for a sub only Bluray of Ghost Game. I still think the show is overall great, and the ending MOSTLY works, even if it’s rushed. I’ll watch a shorter season 2, or a movie that deals with those ideas……. if anyone funds that. Not worried about Tamers, since I know a western release will happen inevitably. Original show and Tamers are the most popular and highly rated out of all Digimon anime.

P.S. Don’t know how you managed to dodge Covid, a super contagious airborne respiratory virus……….. was the ghost of Osamu Tezuka protecting you? But why?? You were only very positive of him every time when covering his work…….
