Anime World Order # 237 – Triv-ia! Don’t Give It Up, Ba-sil! Triv-ia! Don’t Give It Up Ger-ald!

For the tenth time, it’s our annual trivia episode! We are joined by Basil, head honcho of the OSMcast as well as The Carbuncle Chronicle and OSMquest podcasts who’s been doing this for just about as long as we have. Basil has been doing this for about as long as us and is from our same fandom generation, though he’s got more experience on camera as our Patreon supporters at the $5 and up tiers were able to see during the live recording which was held about a week ago.

Introduction (0:00 – 18:20)
We talk to Basil about how he became an anime fan and what inspired him to start podcasting, while also going over his contributions to anime conventions in the Southeastern United States which are numerous enough that we couldn’t get into them all.

Trivia Round One (18:20 – 1:18:22)
The carnage commences! Yell in frustration as we are unable to identify famous anime catgirls, are asked questions about animals in which not one single person says “call me YOON-kers!”, and have to remember anime by their OP/ED song titles…to limited success.

Trivia Round Two (1:18:22 – 2:11:11)
This one’s got a music category aka the sort of thing that would prevent us from posting this to YouTube and the like. We’ve also got to identify titles whose international titles don’t necessarily align to what a translation of their Japanese titles are, aka “absolute anathema to adherent users of MyAnimeList.” There was going to be another round of Anime Family Feud, but regrettably Basil actually had family committments over the weekend and could not simply sit around all day and talk about vague memories of cartoons. There’s always next year, I guess!

  1. You have to stop the presses, and I mean ALL OF THEM, because Heidi Girl of the Alps just had a complete soundtrack released on 3 CDs. This is not a drill, it’s happening! I guess you can mention it in the final episode of 2024 if it comes out in December.

  2. A few comments:
Worst by Takahashi Hiroshi, was not released by Comics One but by Digital Manga. At the same time they release some BL manga and that took off so hard that they paused other works and focussed on that for a year or so. Unfortunately they did not continue Worst, tho’ they did finish IWGP.

In Japan Worst was such a success that there was even a store in Tokyo that sold nothing but Worst merchandise.

All of the Maison Ikkoku TV series did get a DVD release in the US except the film The Final Chapter.

  3. The Cardfight Vanguard music question remind me of a story that a friend told where he was an anime music trivia panel where they played the Big O OP theme and none of the contestants got it even though the song’s only lyrics is the Big O. The Vanguard one was tougher though.

  4. Regarding From Up On Poppy Hill Hayao Miyazaki agreed before production started to maintain a strict hand off on the actual work. He would wander it look at the draft images etc on a bulletin board make a few loud comments to himself and leave. His comments were ignored. It feels much like one of his films as he did the screenplay.

  5. Finished the episode, and noticed you said 2 wrong things. Did not say a single additional wrong thing on top of that, just 2!

Aisha the Outlaw Star catgirl does NOT bathe in lava, but in vague cartoony orange liquid that only exists on one “hot springs episode” planet. I know it’s not lava because Gene falls into it, and only gets mild burns. Outlaw Star may be a little cartoony, but it’s not THAT cartoony. Come on…… it’s not lava, it’s boiled orange soda!

Weathering With You is the better Your Name, and not the other way around. Your Name is this modern masterpiece…… until you notice a sizeable plot hole. That has nothing to do with travel or with time, but with simple logic (or lack thereof). Once you notice the plot hole, Your Name goes from 9 or 10 to 7 or 6. Weathering With You does not have plot holes of that sort, and as a bonus the supporting cast has more depth and feel more like real people.
